CBS fall lineup: ‘Murphy Brown’ and ‘Magnum P.I.’ rise again
On CBS, everything old is apparently new again.
The network on Wednesday announced a fall lineup that features the return of “Murphy Brown” and a reboot of “Magnum P.I.”
Airing on Thursday nights, “Murphy Brown” relaunches with star Candice Bergen reprising her title role as a hard-nosed TV journalist. And like ABC’s “Roseanne,” most of the original cast is back on board, including Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto, and Grant Shaud.
The original 10-season run of “Murphy Brown” ended in May of 1998. The new version will reportedly have the title character hosting a morning cable news show called “Murphy in the Morning.”
Meanwhile, “Magnum P.I.” isn’t being revived with the original cast (Tom Selleck is still busy with “Blue Bloods”). It’s a remake along the lines of “Hawaii Five-0,” with a new star — Jay Hernandez (“The Expanse”) — in the title role as a Hawaii-based detective.
With “Murphy Brown” and “Magnum P.I.,” CBS will now have a whopping five remakes on its fall schedule, including “Five-0,” “MacGyver” and “S.W.A.T.” Even in this era of pop cultural regurgitation, that has to be some kind of record.
But, yes, the network will have some original fare, as well, including new comedies “Happy Together” and “The Neighborhood,” and new dramas “FBI” and “God Friended Me.”
“Happy Together” stars Damon Wayans Jr. and Amber Stevens West as a 30-something couple who begin to reconnect with their younger, cooler selves when a young pop star unexpectedly moves in with them. “The Neighborhood” features Max Greenfield as a friendly Midwest guy who moves his family to a neighborhood in Los Angeles where not everyone looks like him or appreciates his “extreme neighborliness.” Cedric the Entertainer also stars.
“FBI” is a crime drama from prolific producer Dick Wolf (the “Law & Order” and “Chicago” franchises) about the New York unit if the FBI. “God Friended Me” stars Brandon Micheal Hall in a lighthearted drama about an outspoken atheist whose life is turned upside down when he receives a friend request on social media from God and unwittingly becomes an agent of change in the lives of others.
